Anna May Wong: Frosted Yellow Willows, a Documentary
Anna May Wong: Frosted Yellow Willows
"Her Life, Times and Legend"
A documentary film produced by Elaine Mae Woo
Narrated by Nancy Kwan, this documentary film, "Anna May Wong ~ Frosted Yellow Willows: Her Life, Times and Legend" introduces the first Asian American international film star (1905-1961) whose marked beauty and achievements have yet to be rivaled. Her career spanned over four decades. She appeared in over 60 films, starred in domestic as well as international stage productions, and made appearances on top drama shows in early television. Anna was also the first Asian American to have her own television show.
Both Hollywood and Europe proclaimed the exoticism of this Chinese American actress. Anna became known for her fluid grace and languid sexuality on screen. And through the use of photographs, interviews, and film footage from around the world, we will present the actress who charmed audiences worldwide with her piquant style.
In this biographical documentary, we will follow the ascent of Anna May Wong from her humble beginning in Los Angeles, California to her uphill climb in Hollywood and to the peak of her international fame. We will also examine how she struggled against the confining traditions of her own heritage, defied the limitations set on her and other Chinese by the laws of the Chinese Exclusion Act, and how she subsequently utilized her fame to aid people from whom she was three generations removed.
